MapActive Map Reading Course
Dates for Spring 2026 announced:
- 11th April
- 25th April
- 16th May
Our MapActive course shows people of all ages how to confidently read a map in woods, trails, forests and complex urban environments.
The course has proved popular with those who enjoy walking in areas like the Peak District as well as those who were keen to start orienteering as a sport. It assumes no previous map reading experience.
The course is suitable for those aged 8 and older who enjoy being outdoors and are physically able to take on the terrain.
We’ve designed the MapActive course so that everyone acquires basic map reading skills and progresses to more advanced skills over a number of face-to-face sessions.
Sessions are held on Saturday mornings between 1030 and 1230hrs in various locations in and around Nottinghamshire. We include entry into a local orienteering event too, so that you can apply your new skills in an unfamiliar area, an experience which really helps to build your confidence in map reading.
Individuals who cannot attend one or more of the sessions will make progress at their own pace and coaching is designed so that this is possible.
What to expect in the face-to-face coaching sessions:
From little or no orienteering experience, participants develop an understanding of orienteering maps and how to use them.
We quickly introduce basic use of the compass to orientate the map, then how to choose and follow a route using features such as paths, fences and other line features or ‘handrails’ to find checkpoints (controls) on and not far off handrails. You’ll soon learn how to cut corners between handrails and confidently move between different features and vegetation.
Sessions progress to include more advanced use of the compass to find controls further away from paths, and develop a basic understanding of how slopes and valleys are shown on maps using contours.
What to expect at the club event:
This is an opportunity for you to test your understanding and apply your newly acquired skills. You’ll navigate around a suitable course on your own. Our events are friendly and sociable with lots of experienced orienteers around if you need help.
Event entry fees are discounted for those participating in the MapActive course.
The course fees include all maps, the loan of equipment such as compasses, timing devices and club costs such as access charges, levies to British Orienteering and any other expenses.
The Spring 2026 session dates are:
- 11th April at Rushcliffe Country Park
- 25th April at Woodthorpe Grange Park
- 16th May at Bramcote Hill Country Park.
The session fees are:
- Adult: £5 each per session
- Junior: £2 each per session
All NOC coaching is led by Hilary Palmer and Anthony Squire who both have considerable experience coaching orienteering at all levels from beginner to elite, and both continue to compete successfully at national level for their age class.
